Before reading, please visit our article on Accessing and Using the Data Portal to find the datasets you wish to use.
On Map
You can visualize custom datasets as map layers on both the main map and when opening a list (Search Results or Our Sites) on the map.
To access map layers:
Go to the main map or open the list you wish to view on map.
Click "Map Layers" button on the top left of the map. A full pop out will appear with multiple options for map layers. The default navigation view will be "Data layers."
Select "Custom layers" from the two navigation views. This will change the options in the pop out.
Find the layer you are looking for under either "Private custom layers" or "Public custom layers" subheads.
The layer name will match the dataset name exactly as it appears in the Data Portal.
Whether it is "Private" or "Public" depends on the dataset status in the Data Portal. All datasets uploaded by your org and your users will automatically be labeled "Private."
Once you've located the layer, check the box next to the layer, and it will appear on the map. To turn off, uncheck the box.
Tips:
If you know a dataset name, you can type it in the search box at the top of the navigation pop-out to search for the dataset directly.
The layer will only appear as an option if you are in the relevant state on the map. For example, a dataset associated with VA would not appear as an option for viewing if you are in NY on the map. Nationwide datasets will appear as options everywhere, regardless of which state you are viewing on the map.
Some datasets are quite large and may take a minute to load. We recommend zooming in for particularly hefty layers, as they will load faster this way.
Within Search
Custom datasets can also be used with our Search functionality.
To use in Search:
Open a new or pre-filled search, and go through steps 1-7 like normal.
Step 8 will be "Custom Datasets." Select button "+ Add Custom Dataset Filter."
Add one or more datasets here from the drop-down if there are additional items you'd like to take into consideration within your search.
You can choose to:
Include dataset (parcels must overlap with dataset)
Exclude dataset (parcels cannot overlap with dataset)
Away (buffer radius around a dataset)
Near (include radius around a dataset)
Additionally, you can filter on dataset attributes by selecting button "+ Attribute Filter" within the dataset box.
Please Note:
Adding multiple datasets works on AND logic (all must be true).
The dataset will only appear as an option from the dropdown if you are searching in the relevant state. For example, a dataset associated with VA would not appear as an option for a NY search. Nationwide datasets will appear as options for every search state.
As Ad-Hoc Insights
For any list (Search Results or Our Sites), you can generate additional insights for both "distance t"o and/or "intersecting" a custom dataset.
To use in a list:
Open the list you wish to work within.
In the top right, select "Manage" > "Generate more insights"
Select the dataset name you wish to apply to the list.
Where applicable, choose either "Distance to" or "Intersects/Does not intersect" to calculate different values.
You will receive an email when new insights are complete.
